Celebration of the Third Annual "Holidays on the Border"The San Ysidro Business Association celebrated our third annual “Holidays on the Border” on Saturday, December 1, 8, and 15. Santa visited several different shopping centers on each of those dates and passed out balloons and candy to all the children and listened to what they wanted for Christmas. The SYBA also had two free drawings each day for toys and in addition all children could place tickets in a drawing for a giant six foot stocking that was full of toys to be held on the 15th. After the winner was announced on the 15th, Santa had to rush back to the North Pole to prepare for Christmas Eve. ![]() Our New Website– Welcome to our new website. The generous sponsorship of local businesses, Baja Mex, Barob Group, Cedar Realty, Express Financial Services, Nike, San Diego National Bank and Vasquez Enterprises provides trolley tickets, game tickets, free food, and Nike provides the caps. The local organizations, Casa Familiar, San Diego Park and Rec, San Ysidro School District and YMCA provided the just enough crowd control. Though truth be told, sometimes it was hard to say who had more fun or who was sillier."Give Us Your Opinion About the Border Crossing"- On November 14 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM the Government Services Administration will be holding an open house at the San Ysidro Middle School to show businesses and the community what they are proposing for the new port of entry at the San Ysidro Border. Everyone's comment will be recorded. If you are concerned about the impact border traffic has on your business, make your voice heard and attend this meeting. Your comments will go on record. The SYBA is committed to insuring that this new port of entry project makes the border crossing more efficient and secure for both pedestrians and motorists. We are committed to insuring that this project does not adversely affect businesses by grid locking our streets through lack of mobility planning on their part. Help us help you. Attend this open house. Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)– The San Ysidro Business Association received a two-year HUD Section 4 Capacity Building Award of $20,000. This grant award will be used to assist our small businesses in the “Mi Pueblo” Pilot Village redevelopment area to build their economic capacity in preparation for anticipated higher rents, and greater retail exposure.Work has already begun with the SYBA staff meeting with individual business owners to explain the program and determine their interest. The next steps will be for each business owner to have a confidential meeting with a business planner at Small Business Development and International Trade Center (SBDITC) who will assess their current business plans, financials, business practices and growth projections. They will then be able to set up an individualized plan of coursework that will help them to achieve their goals. The SYBA will work in conjunction with the business owner and SBDITC to help coordinate meetings, seminars and to offer special promotional opportunities. SYBA is Awarded Grant! - The SYBA was awarded a $5,000 grant from the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at their Annual Gala on December 7, 2006. This grant will be used to upgrade irrigation system and add new landscape and trees in the medians and parking lot near the San Ysidro Library at 101 W. San Ysidro Boulevard and to the Community Service Center at 663 E. San Ysidro Boulevard. To date Canary Island Pines have been planted at the Community Service Center and Jacarandas have been planted in the medians near the Library. The irrigation has been repaired and upgraded at both locations. The final planting is expected to take place sometime in early '08. Both of these areas are heavily traveled by pedestrians and the goal is to provide year round color and more shade by planting trees. The SYBA is committed to making the community of San Ysidro a more pleasant place to shop by adding landscaping and enhancing the natural environment. |
