Welcome Sign

A second welcome sign featuring the logos of as many as 10 of the
community based organization of San Ysidro, was completed in
March '04. The first welcome sign is located in the median on E. San Ysidro Boulevard at the I-805 off ramp was completed in 2003.

The new welcome sign is located in the median on East San Ysidro
Boulevard at the intersection of Camino de la Plaza.

The sign cost $10,000, and is funded by the SYBA.
Adopt A Block

New ornamental street lights and street trees were installed on the north side of West San Ysidro Boulevard between Cottonwood and Via de San Ysidro. These improvements were paid for through Tax Increment (redevelopment funds), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds of $25,000, Mayor's Tree Imitative of $12,600, and the San Ysidro Business Association contribution of $10,000.

Adopt A Freeway Exit

The San Ysidro Business Association has completed a landscape project in partnership with La Bodega Market at the I-805 exit at East San Ysidro Boulevard. Vines and bougainvillea were planted along the back wall of La Bodega market to mitigate against graffiti and to help beautify the exit. La Bodega market will supply the water for the plants and the SYBA will maintain the project.

SYBA Supplemental Project For MTDB Intermodal

The MTS Intermodal project was a $28 million transit project at the border. It is the site of the busiest trolley station and busiest land border crossing in the world. When the SYBA realized that this project was going to leave one side of one block of East San Ysidro Boulevard without new sidewalks or streetlights we stepped in and worked to coordinate with MTS, Caltrans, and City of San Diego to insure that new wider sidewalks and streetlights would run seamlessly from the Intermodal project on the east side of I-5 to Friendship Plaza project on the west side of I-5.

Future Projects
Pilot Village

The San Ysidro Business Association, in partnership with Casa Familiar and Las Americas was chosen by the City of San Diego as one of their Pilot Village demonstration areas in February 2004. The project we submitted is for a combination of retail shops, and housing along San Ysidro Boulevard from I-805 to Cottonwood.

There will be approximately 140,000 square feet of commercial space, a civic plaza with a civic structure and 650 new units of housing. It is projected to have the look and feel of a Mexican village. The housing will be a mix of apartments and town homes, rental and for sale. At least 20 percent will be affordable to low income families.

The SYBA, and the Business Improvement District Council (BIDC) are working with local property owners in the project area on a unique proposal that will allow the property owners to retain ownership through a limited partnership. This limited partnership would allow the property owners the option of participating in the redevelopment of their property, and reaping the financial benefit of that redevelopment.

In addition to the commercial corridor development, Casa Familiar will be developing several housing projects, including senior housing for grandparents who have custody of grandchildren, other affordable housing, and a Pathways of Knowledge project that will provide a pedestrian link between the elementary schools.

SYBA Supplemental Project For Caltrans Friendship Plaza

The San Ysidro Business Association was instrumental in keeping the Caltrans Friendship Plaza project intact. The original Caltrans Friendship Plaza project was to have included new wider sidewalks, and street lights on Camino de la Plaza from East San Ysidro Boulevard to Camiones Way, but the $1.25 million budget was unable to accommodate these improvements and they were eliminated from the project. SYBA advocated for the additional funds and the City of San Diego through, Tax Increment funds will supplement the project and keep these improvements as part of the project. This portion of the project is expected to begin in summer of 2007 and will include a small pedestrian plaza at the southwestern corner of East San Ysidro Boulevard and Camino de la Plaza.

Phase I of Friendship Plaza on Camiones Way was completed in 2006. This included a new plaza with landscaping, passenger drop off area, and jitney and MTS bus stop area. It also included artwork in the sidewalk depicting all the mission of Alta and Baja California as part of a new entrance into Mexico.

The second phase of the Caltrans project includes a bike route into Mexico along I-5, Landscaping along Camino de la Plaza from E. San Ysidro Boulevard to Camiones Way, a bicycle parking lot near the trolley stop on E. Ysidro Boulevard and a stairway shortcut from Camino de la Plaza to the Camiones Way entrance to Mexico. This portion of the project is almost complete and is expected to be open in November 2007.
